altWho would have thought that one of the most promising markets for soybeans could lie not on land, but beneath the sea? That's exactly what is taking place around the world.  The next major new market for soybeans is aquaculture...fish farming!

In 2007, ISA sprearheaded a strategic planning effort with the Indiana Aquaculture Association and Purdue University's Aquaculture program to develop Indiana's aquaculture industry.

The Indiana initiative is designed to help Indiana farmers (and other interested parties) learn how to grow and market fish to the growing fish markets in our large cities - like Indianapolis, Chicago and the East Coast. For more information, visit www.indianafishfarming.com

Worldwide Soy In Aquaculture Initiative

Indiana and Illinois soybean farmers provided the intiial funding for the United Soybean Board's Worldwide Soy In Aquaculture Initiative.  Today, fish farmers around the world are learning through this program how to use soybean meal in fish diets.  Purdue University's Paul Brown

With ocean fisheries maxed out, and the most popular strains of fish on the rare or endangered species list, aquaculture has become the most sought means for meeting the world's ever-increasing demand for fish. Predictions show that by the year 2035, farmers may produce as many pounds of fish as they do chicken.

Along with this comes an overwhelming demand for a fish feed source that is both cost-effective and in plentiful supply. Feeding these cultured fish a soy-based diet would expend the equivalent of 40 to 90 percent of the current soybean output of the United States.

Unlimited Potential

  • To meet the global demand for fish in the future, aquaculture must grow by 235 to 573 percent in the next 35 years.
  • Global aquaculture demanded 9.738 million acres of soybeans in 1994.
  • Predicted growth of the global aquaculture market could place demand on soybean production in the range of 22.9 to 55.8 million acres within the next 35 years.
